Cyber security is a difficult challenge in an era where threats to the Department’s information and information systems are constantly evolving. The Department of Energy (DOE) faces significant challenges in implementing and maintaining a comprehensive cyber security program that is effective across its diverse missions and large array of interdependent networks and information systems.

The two documents below provide insight into the various approaches the OCIO has already implemented and future efforts.

Published in February 2006, the revitalization plan systematically upgrades the DOE cyber security posture over twelve months, providing a strong beginning to long-term revitalization. The plan is designed to strengthen the Department’s networks and establish a vital, institutionalized cyber security program.

The Cyber Security Action Plan from 2002 defined the OCIO strategic vision of becoming the national center of excellence for safeguarding classified and unclassified information on electronic systems and critical cyber infrastructures.  This enormous undertaking encompassed policies, procedures, and implementation efforts throughout a large, divers, and geographically dispersed organization.
